Diarrhea Treatment for Dog on Prednisone

Corticosteroids such as prednisone are used by veterinarians to alleviate the symptoms of many illnesses, including allergies, dermatitis, various cancers and inflammatory bowel disease. Prednisone can quickly dissipate disease symptoms, but it does not rid the body of disease.

  1. Function

    • Prednisone is a corticosteroid with anti-inflammatory properties that can be given orally or by injection for immediate relief. It helps by influencing the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and fats in the bloodstream and liver.

    Adverse Effects

    • Among other side effects, prednisone can cause vomiting and diarrhea. If your dog experiences stomach upset, contact your veterinarian; this drug should not be abruptly withdrawn.

    Considerations

    • Before using this drug, careful consideration must be given for dogs with other conditions such as diabetes and or kidney problems.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Diarrhea can be treated with prescriptions or by natural methods, including a starting a liquid fast, giving pureed pumpkin, or by feeding a home remedy of 50 percent white potatoes, 50 percent sweet potatoes, a slice of turnip and a slice of leek, all boiled together and then mixed with boiled chicken or lamb for flavoring.

    Warning

    • The presence of diarrhea or black, bloody stools may indicate other more serious conditions, such as gastric ulcers. Request veterinary assistance immediately if this occurs.
