Tree Trimmer Safety

Tree trimmers clearing trees have to be aware of hazards and safety procedures.

Clearing trees and limbs after storms or as part of everyday grounds maintenance requires close attention to potential hazards. Knowledge of safety procedures also helps to protect the trimmer from injury and dangerous situations.

  1. Alertness

    • Being alert on the job is essential for a tree trimmer when approaching any situation, according the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The first thing that should be done is to check the work area for any potential hazards that might be present. If the weather is too severe, the job should be postponed until conditions have improved. Alertness is a key ingredient to preventing accidents and injury.

    Safety Gear

    • Following procedures and wearing the proper safety gear prevents injuries.
Following procedures and wearing the proper safety gear prevents injuries.

Tree trimmers should always wear proper safety gear on when working with equipment such as chainsaws and chippers, according to OSHA. Goggles or safety glasses are important to keep debris from getting into your eyes. A face shield will also block debris, but also protects your face in the case of equipment malfunction. Hearing protection in the form of ear plugs while using loud machinery is important to prevent hearing loss. Leg protection that is made of material that resists cuts should cover up to the thigh.

    Equipment

    • All equipment should be inspected before use to prevent accidents, according to OSHA guidelines. Ropes should have no signs of fraying or major wear, having been stored improperly in the sun, or having been run over by the truck. Harnesses and belts should be in good shape and have no cracking or loose stitching. All carabiners and snap catches should lock securely when closed. Chainsaws, trimmers and other equipment should be in good working order and well maintained,

    Electrocution

    • Many times tree trimmers have to clear trees away from power lines, and there is always the danger of electrocution. When near a power line, keep your clothing, equipment and yourself away from it. There are established limits on the distance that you can work from a downed powerline to protect you in case it becomes electrified. The line can arc and strike you if you come too close if it becomes electrified. The power company should be notified so that they can shield the line or cut the electricity to it first.

    Falls

    • Falling can result in major injuries, so you must never free climb when working; use ropes, harnesses and anchor points as prescribed. You should examine the tree before you climb for cracks or other indications that it may prematurely fall over. If you are using a ladder, it should be secured to the tree. Limbs that have already been cut should be taken off immediately, and if you are using a saw or other cutter in the tree, be sure to keep your safety line clear of them.

    Prevention/Solution

    • The best way to prevent accidents is to follow safety procedures, keep equipment maintained properly, wear safety gear and be knowledgeable about the tools you are using. This will keep you safe and make your job as a tree trimmer successful.
