Cetaphil for Lice Treatment

Cetaphil for Lice Treatment thumbnail
Lice can easily spread among children.

Head lice can infect anybody from preschool- or elementary-aged children to adult family members. An infestation of head lice is easily transmitted; therefore, the key to eliminating lice is early detection and continued treatment. Cetaphil is an effective treatment.

  1. Description

    • Although visible to the naked eye, head lice (the singular term is louse) are tiny, wingless parasitic insects that live in the hair and on the human scalp. They feed on extremely small amounts of blood drawn from the scalp.

    Symptoms

    • Lice are not dangerous, and they don't spread disease; however, their bites may cause an itchy and inflamed scalp. If persistent scratching develops, skin irritation and even infection may occur.

    Transmission

    • According to the Directors of Health Promotion and Education, lice can be transmitted from person to person by clothing, sitting next to or touching the infected person.

    Treatment

    • Cetaphil is a nontoxic cleanser that suffocates lice by clogging their airway passages. Lice can be smothered by massaging Cetaphil into the scalp and leaving it on the scalp until dry. Once dried, Cetaphil should be thoroughly rinsed out of the hair and scalp; then the hair should be wet-combed with a special nit (lice eggs) comb. Additional treatment is necessary to ensure that remaining lice, all the nits and hatched nits are destroyed.

    Caution

    • Cetaphil is an effective way to treat lice, but only when used as directed. Linen, toys and combs also need to be disinfected to destroy any mature lice that may have transferred from the scalp.
