What Is Proin for Dogs?

Proin is a medication originally developed for use in people that was later recalled due to the serious side effects people were reporting. Dogs, however, have not exhibited these side effects (such as high blood pressure), and so Proin remains on the market for them.

  1. Urinary Incontinence

    • Proin treats urinary incontinence in dogs, which occurs when the urethral sphincter does not close enough to prevent urine from leaking from the bladder.

    Active Ingredient

    • The active ingredient in Proin is phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride, which is also called ppa.

    How it Works

    • Proin helps the sphincter muscles become more toned so that they can close more completely and prevent leaking.

    Formulations

    • There are three dosages of tablets available: 25, 50 and 75 milligram tablets, plus liquid drops.

    Names

    • Other names you may see that contain the active ingredient of Proin are Propaline and Cystolamine. It is also marketed under the generic name of phenylpropanolamine.
