Flank pain can be felt between the abdomen and back.

Symptoms of pain in the left flank area can cause discomfort and frustration, and often result from a kidney problem. Fortunately, these symptoms are often preventable and can easily be treated by a doctor.

  1. Features

    • Left flank pain symptoms may include spasms or dull aches on the left side between the abdomen and back; fever; chills; nausea; vomiting; painful urination; and blood in the urine, according to the National Library of Medicine and Merck Manual.

    Identification

    • Doctors diagnose the symptoms of left flank pain by interviewing the patient and conducting an exam. Tests such as abdominal ultrasound or computerized tomography scan; urine culture; X-ray of the spine; or intravenous pyelography might be performed.

    Causes

    • Symptoms of left flank pain might be caused by muscle spasms; spinal disorders; shingles; urinary tract infections; and disorders of the kidney including infections, abscess or stones, according to the National Library of Medicine and Mayo Clinic.

    Treatments

    • Flank pain symptoms caused by muscle spasms or spinal disorders are usually treated with physical therapy, pain relievers and rest; urinary and kidney infections often require antibiotics.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Staying well hydrated; avoiding alcohol and caffeine; using proper technique when exercising; practicing good personal hygiene; and limiting use of soaps or perfumed products on the genital area can prevent conditions that cause left flank pain.
