Doctors diagnose the symptoms of left flank pain by interviewing the patient and conducting an exam. Tests such as abdominal ultrasound or computerized tomography scan; urine culture; X-ray of the spine; or intravenous pyelography might be performed.

Symptoms of left flank pain might be caused by muscle spasms; spinal disorders; shingles; urinary tract infections; and disorders of the kidney including infections, abscess or stones, according to the National Library of Medicine and Mayo Clinic.
Treatments

Flank pain symptoms caused by muscle spasms or spinal disorders are usually treated with physical therapy, pain relievers and rest; urinary and kidney infections often require antibiotics.
Prevention/Solution

Staying well hydrated; avoiding alcohol and caffeine; using proper technique when exercising; practicing good personal hygiene; and limiting use of soaps or perfumed products on the genital area can prevent conditions that cause left flank pain.
