Swiss Business Etiquette

Differences in culture often translate to differences in etiquette and business protocol. When an individual understands a foreign country's business etiquette, she has a greater chance of achieving success internationally.

  1. Geography

    • According to the World Travel Guide, Switzerland is a very popular destination for conducting conventions and conferences. The stability, neutrality and convenient location of Switzerland make it a favorite meeting place for international organizations.

    Formality

    • Swiss society is rather formal. Most people in Switzerland address each other by their surname. This includes colleagues, neighbors and acquaintances. Addressing an individual by his surname is a sign of respect in Switzerland.

    Dress

    • Over the years, according to Executive Planet, the Swiss have evolved in what they consider appropriate dress. Standard attire for men includes suits, white cotton shirts, silk ties and black leather shoes. Women usually wear suits or skirts that are a conservative length. Pantsuits on a woman are also acceptable. In Switzerland, many companies designate Fridays as a day for casual dress.

    Privacy

    • According to Executive Planet, the Swiss are very private people. This means that it is inappropriate to ask personal questions during a business meeting. For example, refrain from questions concerning age, religion and marital status as well as inquiries regarding occupation.

    Punctuality

    • Meetings often are conducted by appointment in Switzerland. Attendees are expected to be punctual. When attending an engagement, an individual should arrive at precisely the appointed time, not late.
