Tooth Implant Recovery

Opting to receive a dental implant is an important decision. It helps with eating, speaking and confidence. It also prevents bacteria from forming in the gap. Recovering from a dental implant is uncomfortable, but there are certain things to do to make it easier.

  1. Process

    • The process of a dental implant takes several months because there are multiple steps. Each step requires a period of recovery before moving on to the next one.

    Time Frame

    • The first step of the implant process requires the longest healing time (three to six months) because this is when the implant is surgically placed.

    Pain Medication

    • The site of the implant will be tender for a while after surgery. Pain medication prescribed by the surgeon, such as ibuprofen, can be taken to reduce swelling and discomfort.

    Expert Insight

    • Because of the tenderness of the implant, the American Dental Association (ADA) recommends a soft food diet until the end of the healing process.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Other things to avoid during recovery are sucking through a straw and smoking. The sucking sensation can create dry socket, which is removing the blood clot from the surgery site. This can lead to infection. Also, tobacco decreases blood supply to the area, further affecting the healing process.
