Sets and reps, or repetitions, are related. Weightlifting, calisthenics and endurance exercises all use sets and repetitions. They refer to the number of times a weight is lifted, a sit-up performed, or a lap is run.

  1. Differences

    • Each time a weight is lifted or an exercise is performed is called a repetition. Each group of repetitions is called a set.

    Significance

    • Four sets of ten repetitions means the weight is lifted, or the exercise is done, 40 times. Breaking this down, the exercise is done ten times on four different occasions during the exercise routine.

    Muscular Endurance

    • More repetitions of an exercise with less resistance increases muscular endurance. This increases the length of time the muscles can work under the strain.

    Muscular Strength

    • Lower numbers of repetitions with more resistance on the muscles increases muscular strength, or the amount of force the muscle can exert one time.

    Effects

    • A good exercise program will include both strength and endurance exercises. A good idea is to alternate days between strength and endurance to improve overall fitness. This also allows the muscles to recover from strength training. Muscle mass will still be formed and honed on both days.
