Can You Get a Rash From Ringworm?

Ringworm is a common type of fungal skin infection that is known for creating red and ring-shaped rashes on the surface of the skin. The appearance of ringworm can vary based on how widespread the infection is.

Causes

Ringworm can be spread by coming in direct contact with someone who has a ringworm rash. It can also be spread by touching infected objects.

Risk Factors

Places with high temperatures and high levels of moisture tend to be conducive to fungus formation. Participating in contact sports like wrestling and grappling increases the risk of getting ringworm.

Symptoms

Ringworm can create rashes that vary from large, bumpy red rings to red swaths of skin that are flaky and dry; it is common for ringworm to itch, and the infection may cause discoloration of nails or hair.

Treatment

Applying over-the-counter antifungal creams containing miconazole or clotrimazole to the rashes is often an adequate cure for ringworm; more severe cases may require prescription medication.

Prevention

To prevent ringworm, shower regularly and stay away from contact with infected people. Those with ringworm should cover their rashes with medical tape and clothing to keep the fungus from spreading.
