What a Teacher Assistant Does in Kindergarten Class?

Kindergarten teachers have their hands full, so many schools employ Kindergarten assistants to help the teachers with providing individual instruction, preparing materials and monitoring students.

  1. Organization and Housekeeping

    • Kindergarten assistants help organize supplies and materials, making sure that everything is accessible and properly stored. They are also asked to do light housekeeping duties, such as helping students clean up after activities, straightening up the room and taking care of any "accidents" students may have.

    Prepping for Lessons

    • Kindergarten assistants are generally responsible for making copies for the head teacher, passing out materials, keeping an inventory of books and supplies and making sure they are available for lessons and replaced as needed. Assistants also make sure any equipment needed for lessons is operational.

    Monitoring Students

    • Kindergarten assistants supervise students at lunch and recess, greet students as they arrive at school and make sure they meet their parents or are put on the bus safely at dismissal. It is the Kindergarten assistant's job to accompany students whenever they leave the classroom.

    Taking Charge

    • When the head teacher is absent a substitute will be assigned to the classroom. But the Kindergarten assistant is responsible for making sure plans and routines are followed as normal.

    Requirements

    • Kindergarten assistants should love working with four- to six-year-olds and have experience with that age group. They should also be able to multitask and be flexible since working with kindergartners is often busy and unpredictable.

    Why Become a Kindergarten Assistant?

    • Kindergarten assistants are able to do a lot of the same things as a teacher--such as planning and grading papers--without a teacher's workload. Kindergarten assistants follow the school calendar, so the job is ideal for those with school-age children who do not have childcare during school holidays.
