Fios TV Vs. Cable & Satellite

Cable television services have seen increasing competition from satellite-based TV and FiOS (fiber-optic service). It may not be clear at first glance, but there are important differences in each service.

  1. Technological Basics

    • Cable TV comes through a coaxial cable in your home, satellite TV comes through satellites orbiting the Earth, and FiOS comes through a fiber-optic cable.

    Fiber-Optics

    • This technology uses strands of plastic or glass to transmit data with light instead of electricity. It is not as common as cable TV and is usually more expensive for the provider to install in a neighborhood.

    Satellite TV Dishes

    • The satellite dish in your home that connects to the orbiting satellites needs to be positioned carefully to get a good signal--sometimes on the roof of your home. The signal can also be affected by bad weather.

    Programming

    • Satellite TV providers may claim to offer more high-definition (HD) content. However, HD availability fluctuates over the course of a year, as do subscription prices.

    Overall

    • For television programming, there is no clear winner, although FiOS has a reputation for higher image quality on some of its HD channels, compared to some cable providers' HD channels.
