How Are Flags Supposed to Be Placed on a Motorcycle?

The U.S. Flag Code provides rules and regulations for flying a U.S. flag from a motorcycle.

  1. The U.S. Flag

    • If flying only the U.S. flag, it should be placed at the center or on the right side of the driver when he is on the bike facing forward.

The U.S. Flag and Another Nation's Flag

    • The U.S. flag should be to the driver's right if there is another nation's flag on the motorcycle. The foreign flag should be at the same height or below the U.S. flag, and it should be the same size or smaller.

The U.S. Flag and Other Non-National Flags

    • The U.S. flag should be in the center and above any other non-national flags. Other flags would include POW/MIA flags and service banners.

The U.S. Flag and Several Other Flags

    • The U.S. flag should be to the driver's right if there are several other flags and should be the highest flag (though no higher than another nation's flag). Other national flags should be arranged alphabetically going left. Remaining flags should be placed in order of importance, with state flags farthest to the right (in order of admittance to the U.S.), territories, military (in order of establishment) and any other flags.

    On the Right

    • The U.S. flag should always be on the right in relation to the direction of movement of the flags in a procession, not to bystanders viewing the flags on a parked bike. Even though the flags are placed on the rear of the bike, the U.S. flag is placed to the rider's right when he sits on the bike facing forward.
