Die Setter Job Description

A die setter works in a production or manufacturing environment setting, producing and repairing tools, dies and special guiding and holding devices that enable machines to manufacture metal and plastics.

  1. Educational Requirements

    • These occupations require a high school diploma or GED, as well as vocational training using computer aided design (CAD) software and reading blueprints.

    Apprenticeship

    • Because of the accuracy involved in these occupations, most employers will require an apprenticeship to learn the skills necessary to perform the job well.

    Responsibilities

    • Working from blueprints, these occupations plan the sequence of operations necessary to manufacture a tool or die. They then manufacture and finish parts ensuring the final product meets required specifications.

    Additional Duties

    • Although most engineers design tools and dies, setters are often involved in the design process using CAD software because of their hands-on knowledge of the manufacturing process.

    Average Salary

    • The Bureau of Labor Statistics' 2008-2009 occupational outlook lists an average salary of $21.29 per hour, and expect these occupations to decline between 2006-2016 because of foreign manufacturing competition and increasing production automation.
