Progesterone & Hair Growth

Hair growth is affected by a number of complicated and often interrelated factors. Progesterone is one of these factors. Too much or too little of the hormone can greatly affect the thickness and amount of hair you have on your head as well as the amount of hair you lose.

Pregnancy

It's common during pregnancy for a woman to notice her hair has gotten a lot thicker and she has more of it. This is due to the surge of progesterone in the body during pregnancy.

Post-pregnancy

After a pregnancy, as hormone levels return to normal, women who found extra hair on their head, find the extra hair falling out at a rapid rate.

Progesterone Deficiency

A hormonal imbalance can cause overall thinning of the hair or male-pattern baldness in women. Often a bioidentical progesterone cream is prescribed to help balance hormones, leading to better hair growth.

Progesterone and Adrenals

Taking too much progesterone over time can build-up in the fat stores leading to disruption of adrenal hormones, which can negatively affect hair growth.

Stress

Stress is tied intimately to progesterone levels and can cause thinning hair. When the stress subsides, the hormones generally regulate themselves.
