Jaw Bone

Jaw bone pain can be a sign of many different medical problems. If your jaw pain is persistent or reoccurring then it is time to get checked by your physician or dentist to see what is causing the problem. Diagnosis is the first step before proper treatment can be given.

  1. Injury

    • Injuries and dislocation of the jaw bones can lead to jaw pain. If your teeth become misaligned, it can be felt in the jaw bone.

    Dental Problems

    • Oral surgery, abscesses, wisdom teeth or periodontal disease may be the cause for jaw bone pain. Infection can occur when the bone is exposed during surgery or extractions.

    Temporomandibular Joint Disorders TMD/TMJ

    • According to the American Dental Association, the jaw bone, muscles and ligaments of the jaw are a complex system with many variable disorders that can cause jaw bone pain, such as temporomandibular joint disorder.

    Bruxism

    • Teeth grinding can cause soreness and pain in the jaw area. Sleep bruxism occurs while sleeping, and you may not even be aware you are grinding your teeth.

    Considerations

    • The National Health Institutes warns that sometimes jaw pain, especially in the lower jaw, can be a sign of a heart attack. Any type of jaw bone pain needs to be addressed with your physician because there are so many possible reasons for its cause.
