Why Is Communication Important in a Family?

Communication is an essential element of family interaction and setting family standards. Family communication dictates the role each member has in the family and is crucial in the development of personality.

Defining a Family

A nuclear family (mother, father, sons/daughters) is a traditional family. However, there are other forms of families. Gay/lesbian families, blended families with children who are not biologically related to both parents, and single-parent families are other forms of families.

Significance of Communication

Setting family standards is done through family communication. The concept of appropriate behavior, such as language and manners, is established through family standards.

Family Health

The health of a family unit is based on family interaction and communication skills. One communication skill needed for a healthy family is the willingness to listen to the concerns of all members before making decisions that will affect the entire family.

Problem Solving

Communication allows family members to deal with the issues of life. For example, say your daughter is going to college out of state and you are upset because you will miss her. You can establish a tradition in which she will call you every weekend to talk. This will help you cope with your feelings.

Lasting Effects

Systems of family communication are usually passed down. When your child starts a family of his own, he is likely to use the same communication methods you did for setting family standards.
