What Does SD RAM Stand For?

SDRAM stands for Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory. It is a type of memory that can run at much higher speeds than convential RAM by eliminating the wait states of the chip.

  1. Format

    • The SDRAM chip is divided into two separate cell blocks and the data is divided between them. As one channel is being accessed, the second channel is being prepared for access.

    Synchronization

    • The SDRAM chip is synchronized with the clock speed of the CPU bus.

    Measurement

    • The speed of SDRAM is measured in MHz rather than nanoseconds. This allows you to compare the speed of the SDRAM with the speed of the CPU bus.

    Types

    • SDRAM is available as single channel, Double Data Rate (DDR), DDR2 and DDR3.

    Speed

    • SDRAM chips can have speeds from 100 MHz to 800 MHz depending on the type of chip being used.
