The United States Constitution provides that the president will receive a salary. Two presidents, George Washington and John F. Kennedy, have declined.

  1. Salary

    • As of 2009, the president of the United States earns a salary of $400,000 per year. He also receives a $50,000 expense account.

    Benefits

    • The federal government pays for the First Family to live in the White House. Camp David is provided for vacations. The president gets five full-time chefs, but pays for his own groceries. He also receives lifelong health care.

    Family

    • Presidential families are given Secret Service protection while the president is in office. Presidential widows are provided $20,000 per year and free U.S. mail privileges.

    Travel

    • When the president flies, he is usually in a highly customized plane, Air Force One. On the ground, he usually travels in his limousine, paid for by the government.

    Retirement

    • Past presidents receive annual pensions. As of 2007, the annual rate was about $180,000. Annual allowances are given to staff former presidents' offices. Secret Service protection is provided for 10 years after a president's term. Medical expenses are paid for former presidents for life. State funerals with military honors are also provided.
