What Is the Role of Moral Development in the Classroom?

Moral development usually begins in the home, but moral development can also be taught in the classroom. For example, children learn gratitude in the classroom by saying thank you when people give them things.

Self-Confidence

One role that moral development plays in the classroom is the building of children's self-confidence. For example, teachers may conduct exercises that show students their strengths and how these qualities enable them to be successful in life.

Respect For Others

Children must learn how to respect others. For example, when a teacher disciplines a student for talking loudly while another student gives an oral presentation, this is molding the disobedient student's character.

Taking Responsibility

When students learn to take responsibility for their actions and acknowledge their mistakes, they're learning moral development. If a child knocks a classmate out of his chair, the teacher points out that it's his responsibility to admit his mistake and apologize.

Generosity

Moral development in the classroom also includes generosity. If a student loses his home in a fire, it would be right for fellow students to raise funds or donate supplies to help the student and his family.

Considerations

Teachers can inspire children to strive for integrity in their lives and to live selflessly. Teachers also exemplify moral development through their behavior. For example, when a teacher spends extra time after school to tutor a struggling student, he shows that he cares.
