Type of Laser for Skin Discoloration

There is a suitable laser for skin discoloration for all skin types

Laser pigment treatment uses a heat producing light source applied to the skin to break up uneven skin pigmentation. The treatment removes skin discoloration from the damaged outer layers of the skin, bringing out a smooth, even skin tone.

Uses

Skin discolorations caused by melasma, liver or sunspots, port wine stains, red birthmarks, enlarged blood vessels, rosacea and red-nose syndrome can be treated with lasers. Laser treatment for skin discoloration is also effective for removing tattoos.

Types

According to the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, the red light laser, yellow light laser, erbium laser and carbon dioxide laser can be used in dermasurgery.

How it works

As laser light passes through the skin it's absorbed by the colored pigment cells. The cells break into microscopic particles, which are expelled by the body's immune system.

Skin types

There's a type of laser pigment treatment suitable for all skin types and colors. Patients are generally able to return to their normal routine the same day of treatment.

Warning

A small percentage of people experience hyperpigmentation (dark spots), hypopigmentation (light spots) or scarring after laser skin treatments for skin discoloration.
