What is Acne?
-
Acne is the chronic inflammation of the sebaceous glands. The sebaceous glands are located under the skin and produce sebum or oil to lubricate the skin and hair. Bacteria enters the pores of the skin and can cause acne. Acne occurs most commonly on the face, neck and back.
Types of Acne
-
There are two types of acne. Acne simplex or common acne is characterized by the formation of pus-filled whiteheads. Acne vulgaris is the more serious form of acne and may require treatment from a doctor. In acne vulgaris, pimples form under the skin and do not form whiteheads.

Electrical Current for Acne
-
You may find relief from acne by the application of a weak electrical current to your affected areas during a facial. High-frequency current is applied with a facial electrode. High frequency does not mean the electrical current is strong, it refers to the wavelength of the electrical current used.
High-frequency electric current has antibacterial properties that help to kill the bacteria that can cause acne. It also promotes circulation which can help to rid your skin of the bacteria that is affected by this treatment. The frequency of electrical beauty treatments will depend on the severity of your condition and the advice of your doctor
Application of Electrical Beauty Treatments
-
During a facial, a technician will cleanse your face and then apply a small glass electrode directly to the areas of your face that have acne blemishes. The glass electrode emits a high-frequency electric current. This application is done for no more than five minutes. After the application of the electric current, your technician will continue with your facial. Typically a mask for oily skin may be applied and removed. After the mask, an astringent may be applied. The final step in your facial may be application of an acne lotion and oil-free moisturizer.
At-home high-frequency devices are available. These use blue light rays alone or with a topical treatment applied to the skin. These at-home devices do not use actual high-frequency electrical current, but high-frequency light rays. The manufacturers of these devices claim that you can see a 70 percent reduction in acne within four to eight weeks after beginning treatment.
Benefits of Electrical Beauty Treatments for Acne
-
In conjunction with a doctor's care, the application of high-frequency electric current during facials or use of an at-home device can improve your skin's appearance. Reduction of pustules and papules are seen in the majority of people within a few weeks of treatment.
