Pros & Cons of Resin Wicker

Pros & Cons of Resin Wicker thumbnail
The beauty of wicker

Resin wicker is a great way to get the beauty of rattan wicker furniture without the disadvantages associated with regular wicker furniture, like mildew, rot and color fading. When made correctly, resin wicker will be some of the most durable pieces in your garden. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. What is Resin Wicker?

    • Wicker refers to a method by which plant fibers were woven together to create the wicker look that is so popular. Resin wicker is the same process, but in lieu of plant fibers that are prone to rot, resin fibers are used, adding strength, durability and longevity to the same look as rattan wicker.

    Longevity and Weatherproof

    • The resin wicker material must be weaved around a base frame. Teak is the strongest of the frames, but heavier and more expensive. Aluminum is the most popular as it is lightweight and rust-free, and together with the resin wicker makes for products that can withstand the elements for many years to come.

    Maintenance

    • Maintaining resin wicker furniture is easy. Simply hose off the wicker furniture, or if needed, a scrub can be used to remove stains and debris. For the spaces in between each resin fiber, a toothbrush can be used to remove dirt.

    Colors and Splinters

    • Regular wicker had to be weaved, then painted. Resin wicker is produced in a wide array of colors and never need repainting. With quality resin wicker, the color will never fade. Unlike real plant fibers, resin wicker does not splinter and will always provide comfortable seating.

    Weight, or Lack Thereof

    • Unless paired with teak wood, resin wicker furniture is not heavy and may not be suitable for climates where high winds are common. Especially when combined with lightweight aluminum, it is possible to find wicker furniture carried many houses away when strong winds are present.
