Real Job vs. Temp Agency

A "real job" is when you work on a permanent basis for an employer. You have the intention of long-term employment and an opportunity for advancement within the same organization. A temporary agency is an organization that places you in a job within another company, where you work for a certain, usually limited, period of time. You are still employed by the temp agency until you land a job where you can build stability. There are strengths and weaknesses in both types of employment.

  1. Strengths of a Real Job

    • When you have a real job, you have a better chance of working your way up towards advanced career opportunities. For example, if you started your career as a bank teller, you can increase your skills and education to later become the branch manager.

    Weaknesses of a Real Job

    • One weakness of having a real job is that there is sometimes monotony in performing the same tasks each day. In addition, if you have a fixed weekly schedule, it may leave you little time to engage in other activities outside of work except maybe on weekends.

    Strengths of a Temporary Agency

    • When you work with a temporary agency, you have a more flexible work schedule and you can also choose the jobs you want. For example, if you're offered an administrative position but you're more skilled in culinary arts, you can hold out until a job offer comes that suits your skills. In addition, some temporary jobs can, over time, become permanent ones.

    Weaknesses of Temporary Agencies

    • The disadvantage of a temporary agency is that you're not rooted in any particular field so it leaves little room for long-term career advancement. In addition, there may be times when you're waiting a longer period of time for employment than those who apply for non-temporary jobs. Also, most temporary agencies don't offer benefits such as health insurance.

    Considerations

    • Whether you work at a real job or with a temporary agency, it's important to do your best on the job and learn everything you can so that you'll be more prepared to achieve greater success in bigger positions.
