Electrical Safety in Changing a Lightbulb

Changing a light bulb seems easy enough, but there are some things that you should think about when changing a light bulb. Take the time to do things safely so that you aren't injuring yourself or the wiring in your home.

Use A Ladder Or Sturdy Stool

If you have to get up on something to reach the bulb, be careful. You don't want to fall. Be sure to stand on something that is going to keep you stable.

Replace A Similar Wattage

You don't want to overload the circuit, so always replace the bulb with a similar wattage. It's alright to vary it a little, but stay close to the original.

The Bulb Gets Hot

You need to be cautious when you touch the bulb. The light produces heat that can seriously burn you. Allow it to cool or use a hot-pad holder to unscrew the bulb.

Turn The Light Off

When a bulb is burnt out it will appear to be off, but it isn't. Be sure to turn the light off.

Examine The Bulb Before You Try To Unscrew It

Sometimes the bulb gets cracked or broken. Turn off the breaker or unplug the lamp to be sure there is no electricity in these types of cases.
