Different Kinds of Door Locks

Different Kinds of Door Locks thumbnail
There are many different kinds of door locks that can help protect a home from intruders.

When it comes to keeping a family safe and secure in their home, a good door lock is often the best first line of defense. Knowing the differences among the different kinds of door locks is crucial to making the best choice, when deciding on which kind of lock should be used to help protect your home. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Single-cylinder Deadbolt

    • The most common type of door lock, single-cylinder deadbolt, has a keyhole on the outside of the door and a notch on the inside that can be turned to lock or unlock the door. A turn of either the key or the notch sends a thick metal bolt inside the door jamb.

    Double-cylinder deadbolt

    • A double-cylinder deadbolt is distinguished from the single-cylinder deadbolt by the fact that the portion inside the house has a keyhole rather than a notch. While sometimes inconvenient for day-to-day usage, this can help thwart more technically-proficient burglars.

    Surface-mount deadbolt

    • A deadbolt where a D-shaped apparatus is mounted on the inside portion of the door itself, the surface-mounted deadbolt can help prevent a burglar from hammering off the deadbolt from the outside. However, it can be unsightly and difficult to install in certain circumstances.

    High-security deadbolt

    • While more expensive, a high-security deadbolt can be a valuable defense against those who know how to pick locks. Look for designation on the packaging that indicates that the lock includes sturdier cylinders and differentiated pin arrangements.

    Handle Set

    • Those concerned about the aesthetics of a deadbolt can purchase a lock with a visually-pleasing handle on the outside and a keyhole on the inside of the door. A second deadbolt is typically placed above the handle in such an arrangement so that the door can be unlocked from the outside.
