What Is a Mastopexy Surgery?

Mastopexy is a type of surgery designed to improve the appearance of a woman's breasts. Mastopexy is also known as breast lift surgery.

  1. Purpose

    • The goal of mastopexy is to improve breast appearance by lifting them up from their sagging state, yet minimize the visible scars the procedure could leave.

    History

    • Mastopexies have been performed in various forms since the 7th century. Paul of Aegina (c. 625--690 AD), a Byzantine Greek physician, is the earliest known person to perform a procedure close to a mastopexy.

    Advantages

    • The main advantage of mastopexy is a more youthful appearance as a result of better-looking, upper projecting breasts.

    Disadvantages

    • Mastopexy usually comes at the price of sustaining scars. The surgical procedure can also cause health complications.

    Popularity

    • According to a 2007 report by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, more than 126,000 mastopexies were performed in the United States.
