Removing makeup every night can help prevent acne.

Acne occurs when pores in the skin become clogged with oil, dirt, and bacteria. Acne is most common in teenagers, but it can occur at any age. There are many treatments for acne.

  1. Prevention

    • Before using acne medication, try cleansing your skin twice a day with a gentle soap or facewash. Wash your hair daily, keep your hair out of your face, and avoid touching your face.

    Over-the-Counter Options

    • Over-the-counter acne creams and lotions work by killing bacteria and drying out your skin. These medications contain benzoyl peroxide, resorcinol, or salicylic acid.

    Oral Antibiotics

    • Your dermatologist may prescribe oral antibiotics, such as minocycline, doxycycline, or tetracycline, to help clear your acne.

    Topical Antibiotics

    • Dermatologists may also prescribe topical antibiotics like clindamycin or erythromycin, which are applied to the skin.

    Birth Control Pills

    • Birth control pills sometimes improve acne in women, although they can also make it worse.
