About Depression & Cutting in Adolescents

Teenagers sometimes turn to cutting themselves when they're feeling depressed. Many teens describe cutting as a way to release their feelings and pain. Teens who cut themselves usually try to hide the cuts from parents and peers with clothing.

  1. Signs of Depression

    • If your teen seems sad or irritable on a regular basis, has trouble sleeping or is sleeping too much, is gaining or losing weight and talks about death or dying, he may be depressed.

    Signs of Cutting

    • One major sign that your teen is cutting is if she wears long sleeves and long pants in the summer or when it's hot outside.

    • Cutting is more prevalent in girls than boys.
