Swine Flu Vs. Allergies Vs. Cold Symptoms

Swine Flu Vs. Allergies Vs. Cold Symptoms thumbnail
Cold, allergies, and swine flu all have similar symptoms.

Each year millions of Americans are infected by the common cold, allergies and influenza. As of 2009, over 4,000 people are infected with the swine flu, and numbers are expected to grow. With all of the symptoms being similar, it is hard to distinguish which condition you have.

  1. Respiratory Symptoms

    • Coughing and sneezing are both symptoms of cold, swine flu and allergies. The difference is that the coughing lasts only a few days with a cold, and it may be dry (non-productive). Coughs that are associated with swine flu or allergies will last several days, often throughout the duration of the illness.

    Gastrointestinal Symptoms

    • Allergies and colds do not typically cause gastrointestinal upsets. With swine flu, people have been known to develop diarrhea and nausea or vomiting.

    Neurological Symptoms

    • Colds do not cause neurological symptoms. However, both the swine flu and allergies often cause headaches that may range from mild to severe (migraines).

    Complications

    • Colds may develop into bronchitis if respiratory symptoms do not clear up after a week. Allergies generally have no real health complications if treated promptly. Swine flu on the other hand has been known to trigger pneumonia, which may be deadly if not treated.

    Special Consideration

    • If you feel you are experiencing any symptoms of swine flu, cold or allergies please see your physician, as these conditions cannot be diagnosed at home.
