According to the Encyclopedia 2 Free Dictionary, "liberalism assumes that people, having a rational intellect, have the ability to recognize problems and solve them and thus can achieve systematic improvement in the human condition."

  1. Individual Freedom

    • Individual freedom is at the heart of progressive philosophy. In September 1960 John F. Kennedy, in defending liberalism said, "I believe in human dignity as the source of national purpose, in human liberty as the source of national action..."

    Origins

    • Progressive liberalism originated during the Reformation period of the 16th century. Protestant reformers of the time stressed the importance of individual thought and action.

    The Progressive Movement

    • The U.S. progressive movement of the early 20th century highlighted liberal philosophy. Achievements during that era include the Sherman Anti-Trust Act, the establishment of government conservation programs, and passage of the Nineteenth Amendment, which gave women the right to vote.

    Current Progressive Ideology

    • Today, liberals generally support the creation of a universal health-care system, the right of gays to marry, abolition of the death penalty, and relaxed immigration policies.

    Theories/Speculation

    • David Sirota, in writing for the "Huffington Post," states his belief that liberals and progressives are different. Liberals, he claims, spend money to solve problems while progressives prefer the use of government intervention.
