The Coast Guard requires physical fitness of its members.

One of five branches of the United States Armed Forced, United States Coast Guard, provides the nation with law enforcement on its nautical borders. Those seeking to join this elite group of military personnel must meet and maintain a variety of strict physical standards.

  1. Coast Guard Fitness Plan

    • Members of the Coast Guard are charged with developing an individualized annual fitness regimen consisting of cardio respiratory and strength training.

    Coast Guard Physical Fitness Assessment

    • Annually, Coast Guardsmen are required to take part in a fitness assessment to ensure they are able to meet specific criteria.

    Push-Ups and Sit-Ups

    • Male members of the Coast Guard must be able to successfully complete between 18 and 29 push-ups and 29 and 38 sit-ups, based on the age of the individual. Women must be able to complete 13 to 23 and 20 to 32, respectively.

    Semi-Annual Weigh-in

    • Each April and October, all Coast Guardsmen are required to participate in a weigh-in, to ensure that weigh and body fat standards are met.

    Body Fat Standards

    • Men and women below the age of 30 must maintain a maximum body fat percentage of 23 percent and 33 percent, respectively, and 25 percent and 35 percent if they are between 30 and 40 years of age. Coast Guard men and women over 40 must have less than 27 percent and 37 percent body fat, respectively.
