What Are the Benefits of Recycling Sewage Water?

With droughts, rising populations and simple wastefulness, the demand for water has risen in recent years, while the supply has dwindled. Thus, it makes sense for cities, states and even entire countries to look into the benefits of recycling sewage water.

  1. Groundwater Recharging

    • One of the few occasions where sewage water is recycled for potable (drinking) purposes is that of recharging diminished groundwater supplies. This is accomplished by injecting the recycled water directly into the ground water aquifers to supplement water supplies and protect against the intrusion of saltwater in coastal areas.

    Irrigation

    • Recycled water can take the place of other water resources for irrigation purposes on farms, public parks and golf courses.

    Industrial Coolant

    • Recycled sewage water can be used as a coolant at power plants and oil refineries, thereby reducing the demand placed on potable water reserves.

    Wide Range of Uses

    • Recycled water can be used for a wide range of other purposes including: industrial processes requiring water at paper mills as well as for carpet dyes, controlling dust, flushing toilets, mixing concrete and creating artificial lakes--all of which preserve water from traditional supplies.

    Cheaper than the Alternative

    • Recycling sewage water is cheaper than the next best alternative method of replenishing the water supply--desalination of saltwater. Desalinated water costs between $800 and $2,000 per acre-foot as opposed to $525 for recycled sewer water.
