Blueberries & Crohn's Disease

Crohn's disease is a chronic disorder causing the immune system to attack healthy bacteria and food in the digestive tract. Malnutrition, inflammation of the digestive tract and diarrhea are among the effects of Crohn's disease. Including blueberries in your diet addresses these Crohn's disease symptoms.

  1. Caloric Intake

    • Foods high in complex carbohydrates, like blueberries, should make up about half of the caloric intake for Crohn's disease patients.

    Nutrition

    • An effect of Crohn's disease is malnutrition. Blueberries are among the most nutritious fruits, particularly high in Vitamin C , Manganese , Dietary fiber and Vitamin E. Use ripe blueberries for best nutritional benefit.

    Anti-Diarrhetic

    • Crohn's disease causes the body to be unable to fully absorb nutrients from food, which leads to diarrhea. A natural compound in blueberries fights diarrhea-causing bacteria and tightens the bowels, unlike many fruits which may aggravate diarrhea.

    Inflammation

    • Crohn's disease causes digestive tract inflammation. Tanins in blueberries reduce this inflammation.

    Warning

    • High fiber foods, like blueberries, can cause gas. Over the counter products are available to reduce gas.
