What Are the Causes and Symptoms of Jaw Pain?

Jaw pain can be cause by the joint, bone, nerves or underlying illness. When experiencing jaw pain, it is important to contact your dentist and schedule an appointment.

  1. Jaw Conditions

    • Conditions which affect the jaw, or temporomandibular joint, result due to damage and/or the muscles used for chewing and talking become stressed, causing pain. The cause may result from a number of factors. Disalignment of the joint or injury may result in a temporomandibular disorder. Symptoms include jaw pain, limited jaw movement, pain on chewing, locking of the jaw and radiating pain.

    Sinsitus

    • Sinusitis is any infection or inflammation of the sinus cavities behind the eyes and nose. Symptoms include cold or flu like symptoms, coughing, tiredness, sneezing, aches, and severe headache. Jaw discomfort and/or pain may also occur as a result of sinusitis.

    Hyperostosis Cortical Infantile

    • Hyperostosis cortical infantile is a rare inflammatory disorder that affects soft tissue and bones in infants, Symptoms include irritability, soft tissue swelling, bone changes, bone lesion, and pain, including pain and discomfort in the jaw.

    Osteoarthritis

    • Osteoarthritis is a form of arthritis and is normally age-related. Symptoms of osteoarthritis are joint symptoms and pain, joint tenderness and stiffness, and tenderness around the joint. Pain in the temporomandibular may occur.

    Toothache

    • Toothache is caused by an irritation of a nerve in the tooth root. Tooth pain may result from tooth infection, decay, injury or tooth loss. Symptoms include tooth pain, tooth sensitivity, jaw pain, and headache.
