Similarities
-
Makeup ingredients are often the same. Surprisingly, most of the ingredients in mineral makeup and traditional makeup are virtually the same.
The difference is the percentages of those ingredients. Mineral makeup advertises its product as all-natural. Check the ingredients to see if the synthetic fillers, dyes and fragrances really are absent.
Reactions
-
Sensitive skin can react to ingredients in makeup. Bismuth oxychloride is present in both types of makeup and has been known to cause harmful allergic reactions. If you have sensitive skin, this is one reason you might want to stick with traditional liquid makeup; the concentration of it is lower in traditional makeup than in mineral makeup.

Mica
-
Mica adds shimmer to makeup. Mica is another ingredient found in both types of makeup. It gives the makeup shimmer and shine. Mica in its pure form can be dangerous if inhaled, but under Food and Drug Administration guidelines the percentages that are approved for makeup are deemed safe.
Testing
-
Smooth skin The cosmetic industry defers all its safety testing to the FDA. The testing and allowances are complex and vary from product to product. The only way to tell if one of the approved ingredients is too much for your skin, whether mineral-based or otherwise, is to try it.
Coverage
-
Different makeup types offer different levels of coverage. The coverage you get with mineral foundation often feels lighter and healthier. Liquid makeup and pressed powders have a tendency to clog pores and have a caked-on look.
Cleanup
-
Mineral makeup requires extra cleanup. Mineral makeup can be very messy. The powder can get all over your bathroom sink, especially if you spill it.
