What is an Army motor pool?

An Army motor pool is a designated area where Army units park their vehicles between operations. These designated areas are usually fenced in and patrolled by guards who control access through a central gate.

  1. Function

    • Motor pools serve as a designated parking lot, a secured maintenance area, and a guarded vehicular control point that ensures vehicles that leave are properly dispatched and have passed appropriate safety inspections.

    Parking

    • Each Army unit is assigned a specific motor pool and a designated area within it that essentially serves as a reserved parking lot. Vehicles are lined up within their designated area with meticulous military precision, ensuring maximum use of available space and the ability to perform maintenance.

    Maintenance

    • Motor pools serve as the maintenance operations base for Army units and house essential equipment for mechanics to perform critical maintenance services.

    Access

    • Guards check all personnel entering the motor pool for authorized access. All vehicles leaving the motor pool are checked to ensure they are properly dispatched with a commander's authorization to exit.

    Assembly Area

    • When units come together during tactical military operations, they do not enter a motor pool. Instead, they form what is called an "Assembly Area" or "Alpha-Alpha," where the vehicles form a defensive circle facing outward.
