Manual Pallet Jack Safety

Manual pallet jacks are used in industrial warehouses or similar settings for lifting and moving heavy loads. They are back savers for workers who use them, but certain precautions must be observed in order to avoid injury.

  1. Preparation

    • Read the instruction manual. Do not attempt to operate a pallet jack until you are familiar with it and understand all instructions and warnings.

    Equipment Check

    • Prior to each use, check wheels, handle, forks, lift/lower control and brakes (if your model has them). Do not operate the jack if it is damaged in any way.

    Precautions

    • Be aware of the necessary turning radius to protect the load, as well as workers in the area. Use only on flat or nearly flat surfaces; a loaded pallet jack has tremendous mass and can gather speed quickly on even a slight slope.

    Loading

    • Loads should be tightly packed and stable, and pallets should be sound. Do not handle loads which may shift or fall, and do not overload the jack.

    Operating

    • Operate the pallet jack only from the position designated by the instruction manual. Never place any part of your body in the lifting mechanism or under the load, and never carry passengers.
