Doxycycline for Bladder Infections

Bladder infections are caused by bacteria getting into the bladder through the urethra. More women than men get bladder infections since women have shorter urethras. Bladder infections can be treated with antibiotics such as doxycycline.

  1. Symptoms

    • Symptoms of bladder infections include pain and burning while urinating, cloudy or bloody urine, and in more severe cases, chills, nausea, and fever.

    Use

    • Doxycycline is used to treat bladder infections that occur as a result of the bacteria mycoplasma hominis or chlamydia trachomatis. Infections that result from mycoplasma hominis or chlamydia trachomatis require a longer course of treatment than infections caused by other types of bacteria.

    Other Names

    • Doxycycline is also known by the following names: Doxy Lemmon, Adoxa, Doryx, Vibramycin Calcium, Vibramycin Hyclate, Vibramycin Monohydrate, Vibramycin, Doxy Caps, Periostat, Monodox, Vera-tabs, and Oracea.

    Considerations

    • Doxycycline should not be taken with birth control pills because it can make birth control pills less effective. Pregnant women should not take doxycycline because it can interfere with the development of teeth and bones in an unborn baby. Also, doxycycline should not be taken by chlidren under the age of eight.

    Warning

    • Doxycycline should not be taken after the expiration date, because when it has expired it can cause kidney damage.
