Nocturia Treatment Information
Nocturia is a condition in which you wake up several times during the night to urinate. Although it's most commonly found in the elderly, it can affect anyone.
-
Causes
-
There are many causes of nocturia, including drinking too much fluid before bedtime. Other factors are benign prostatic hyperplasia; some drugs including diuretics, cardiac glycosides, demeclocycline, lithium, methoxyflurane, phenytoin, propoxyphene; excessive vitamin D; and diabetes.
Other Causes
-
Nocturia is often a symptom of another medical problem. Urinary tract infections, tumors on the bladder or prostate, and liver failure are some of the conditions that can cause nocturia.
-
Treatment Basics
-
Treating nocturia depends on a number of factors, including determining what makes the problem worse or better; if other symptoms are also present; if you have increased thirst, pain, or burning on urination; fever, abdominal pain, or back pain; what medications you take; if you have had any bladder infections in the past, and if you have changed your diet recently.
Treating Nocturia
-
Because nocturia hasn't been widely researched, treatment can vary from patient to patient. Some remedies include limiting fluid intake, taking afternoon naps, and wearing compression hose.
Recent Statistics
-
Researchers have recently learned that nocturia is a symptom of sleep apnea and that curing the sleep apnea can cure the nocturia.
