Numerous free online resources exist to help you get started tracing your family's roots. Ancestry.com has 3 million active users, but there are several sites you can choose, according to the Today Show and reported on MSNBC.MSN.com.

      Online resources offer the fastest and most comprehensive information on family roots. Many of these sites have partnered with archive associations so that you can find practically any information you are looking for.

    Sites

    • Sites such as Roots Web, Genealogy Today, Dead Fred and Footnote offer free sign-up and searching systems, along with ways to share the information with other family members and to contact family as well.

    Records

    • Searching numerous records and databases is free and can be done at a site such as Genealogy Today. It has a database sections called Criminal Records, Funeral Cards, Ration Books (from World War II), Railroad Employees and Business Cards to help trace your family roots.

    Newspaper and Documents

    • Note that you are able to search newspapers, death and marriage certificates, U.S. census records, and immigration and military records. Sites such as Genealogybank.com have compiled these records from all 50 states dating back 300 years.

    Photos

    • Utilize photo searching options at the website called Dead Fred, which has a database of photos that have been uploaded by other users. You can upload your own photos too.
