What to Expect From Your First Allergist Appointment

Many people are allergic to pets.

Allergic reactions are immune system responses to substances that most people do not react to. People are often allergic to pets, pollen, mold, medicine or food. An allergist can perform tests to diagnose your allergies.

Preparation

Certain medications interfere with skin test results. If you take antihistamines, cough or cold medicine, sleep medication, antidepressants or antacids, speak to your doctor to determine how long you should stop taking your medicine.

Medical Evaluation

Your allergist will take your medical history and discuss the history and pattern of your allergic reactions. If you have kept track of your allergic reactions, bring the information with you.

Skin Testing

Your allergist may decide to perform skin tests to diagnose allergies. Skin testing involves placing tiny amounts of different proteins on your skin to see which proteins your body reacts to.

Results

Skin test results are usually available 15 to 20 minutes after testing.

Warning

Do not use lotion, oils, creams or similar products on your back or arms the day of your appointment. These can interfere with skin testing.
