Information About the Anxiety Drug Lexapro

Lexapro is classified as an antidepressant. Lexapro is used in the treatment of major depressive disorders in adults and adolescents, between the ages of 12 to 17. It is also prescribed for treating generalized anxiety disorder (GAD).

  1. Function

    • Lexapro helps anxiety by increasing the amount of serotonin in patients. Serotonin is a substance produced in the brain which influences mood.

    Identification

    • Lexapro is available in liquid form or as a tablet. Prescribed strengths for tablets are 5mg, 10mg or 20mg. Liquid strength is 5mg/5ml and is peppermint flavor. Lexapro should be taken with a full glass of water.

    Warning

    • Antidepressants can increase the risks of suicidal behavior and thinking. Patients should be monitored closely by caregivers when first taking Lexapro. Lexapro is not approved for use for patients under 12 years old.
