Road Construction Safety Signs

Road Construction Safety Signs thumbnail
It is important for safety to heed posted construction signs.

Road construction causes frustration for motorists, but it is important to protect the safety of other motorists and workers. Know what signs to look for so the process can move along as efficiently as possible.

  1. Appearance

    • Most construction warning signs are diamond-shaped and orange with black lettering or images. If you see orange signs, be prepared to slow down and heed the warnings.

    Word Signs

    • Worded construction signs warn of lane or shoulder closures, machinery, utility workers, flag people, road workers, survey crews, impending stops, detours (with directional arrows) and number of feet before construction begins.

    Image Signs

    • Some signs contain the icon of a person with a flag to warn of flag people, holding a signaling paddle to warn of stop/go paddle handlers, or shoveling to signal workers ahead.

    Electronic Signs

    • Electronic signs are placed along highways with information concerning alternate routes, lane closures, road work ahead, the number of miles of construction and other details.

    Purpose

    • Construction signs exist to create a safer environment for workers and prevent vehicular accidents. Remember to read and obey all signs, merge lanes early to avoid road rage, keep a safe distance between cars, pay close attention and, above all, slow down.
