What Meds Will Doctors Give for Genital Warts?

Genital warts are caused by infection with human papillomavirus. Some genital warts go away on their own over a matter of months, but others require medical treatment, either with medication or sometimes surgery. There is no cure for HPV infection.

  1. Types

    • Three different medications are used in the management of genital herpes. These include imiquimod (brand name Aldara), podophyllin and podofilox (brand name Condylox) and trichloroacetic acid, according to the Mayo Clinic. These are all topical treatments.

    Effects

    • Medical treatments for genital warts may help you fight them off on your own (imiquimod), break down warts (podophyllin and podofilox) or burn off the warts (TCA).

    Considerations

    • According to the Mayo Clinic, medication is used mostly in cases where genital warts lead to itching, burning or pain or when individuals are disturbed by their warts.

    Features

    • Some treatments for genital warts must be administered in a doctor's office while others are used at home. Medications should always be taken exactly as prescribed by a doctor.

    Warning

    • Over-the-counter treatments should not be used in the management of genital warts, as these can cause further damage, according to both the Mayo Clinic and Medline Plus.

    Significance

    • In some cases, as when other treatments are not working or when a baby might be exposed, a doctor may recommend surgical removal of genital warts.
