White
-
White represents cleanliness and purity, and it is the most versatile wall color. It can make small rooms seem larger and can brighten rooms of any size. White can also be cold and clinical if it is used to excess.
Blue and Purple
-
Blue is calming and tranquil and promotes relaxation, but it can also be cold. Small rooms or rooms that don't receive much natural light can become depressing if they are painted dark blue. Blue is also said to curb the appetite. Purple is considered meditative and spiritual, and is a favorite color for artists and other creative people. Purple can be cool or warm, depending on whether the color leans toward red or toward blue, but it is not as cold as dark blue.

Green
-
Green is a very complex color and has many hues. Clean greens are fresh and vibrant, but olive drab and muted tones can be depressing. Pastel greens are relaxing. Bright yellow-greens are energetic and make good accent colors but can be overwhelming if used on an entire room.
Yellow
-
The color of the sun, yellow, is cheerful and energetic. A yellow room will seem warm, but bright yellow can be over-stimulating and even create anxiety. Yellow is a powerful color and works well as an accent color.
Red and Pink
-
Red is stimulating and powerful, and it can actually raise blood pressure. Red stimulates the appetite and is appropriate in a dining room. Deeper reds add a feeling of luxury to a room. Pink is soft, warm, sweet, feminine. The color is relaxing and romantic, but it doesn't have the fire that red does. Pink walls are said to reduce anger.
Brown
-
Brown colors range from light tan and beige to dark umber and chocolate. Brown is an earth tone and represents security. Browns can be neutral, cool, or warm, depending on the hue. Russets will make a room feel warmer than a beige room.
