Concerta is used to treat ADHD.

Concerta, also known as methylphenidate HCl, is one of the most commonly prescribed central nervous system stimulants in the United States. Children and young adults benefit from the long-lasting effects of this popular medication.

  1. Uses

    • Concerta is generally used to treat symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). It is also used to help in weight loss and in the treatment of narcolepsy and depression.

    Dosage & Administration

    • Available in 18 mg, 27 mg, 36 mg and 54 mg capsules, Concerta is usually prescribed to be taken once daily. Occasionally, a second daily dose may be needed.

    Side Effects

    • Some potential side effects of Concerta include insomnia, headaches, loss of appetite and abdominal pain. More serious side effects include allergic reaction, increased blood pressure, suicidal thoughts and chest pain.

    Benefits

    • One benefit of using Concerta is that extra pills are not needed during school. In addition, improvements in academics, behavior and social skills have been reported with use of Concerta.

    Disadvantages

    • Although Concerta is time released, it often wears off early in the afternoon. Pills can't be cut or chewed due to the extended release feature, making it difficult to fine tune the dosage.
