Wobbler's Syndrome in Dobermans

Wobbler's Syndrome in Dobermans thumbnail
Wobblers syndrome is usually found in older Dobermans

Dogs often suffer from painful conditions. Yet, with their good natures and inability to talk, their owners often don't understand they are suffering. Purebred dogs typically have conditions specific to their breed, so it is important to understand what those are. Dobermans are especially prone to contract a condition called Wobbler's syndrome.

  1. About

    • Wobbler's syndrome is also called cervical vertebral instability. It causes the dog to walk abnormally and experience discomfort.

    Risk Factors

    • Dog breeds that are large are most at risk for this condition. Typically, Wobbler's syndrome is seen in older Dobermans.

    Signs/Symptoms

    • The symptoms of Wobbler's syndrome begin slowly and usually start with the back legs appearing to be unstable when the dog walks. Other signs include the dog walking with his or her neck lowered or an appearance of stiffness.

    Treatment

    • Veterinarians usually prescribe medication to relieve the pain and inflammation, but sometimes surgery is necessary. Additionally, dogs that can rest and limit activity seem to heal faster from the syndrome.

    Prevention

    • The best way to prevent Wobbler's syndrome in a susceptible breed it to closely monitor their diet so that their growth rate is kept at a normal, as opposed to rapid, rate. A quality dog food can help keep the growth rate normal.
