How Fast Do You Get a Return With E-File?
Taxpayers who file their federal returns electronically with the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will get their refunds substantially faster than those who send in their returns via the postal service.
-
Speedy Refunds
-
The IRS says taxpayers who e-file can get their refunds in as little as 10 days if they choose to have the refund deposited directly into their bank accounts. It will take longer to get a refund if the taxpayer wants a paper check or files the return by snail mail.
Free Tax Preparation
-
The IRS maintains a list of companies that will prepare uncomplicated returns for free based on information from taxpayers. The finished return can be filed electronically (e-file) or printed out and mailed in.

Benefits to E-Filing
-
The IRS says benefits to e-filing include being able to do returns any time, speedier refunds (mailed returns could take a couple of months to get refunds) and saving paper.
Complicated Returns
-
Taxpayers with more complicated finances can use a professional tax service, which can e-file the return. The IRS website also has forms that taxpayers can fill in online to e-file.
Fun Fact
-
The IRS states that 95 million people used e-file in 2009; this was up from 35.4 million in 2000.
