Irish Soccer Drills & Styles
Irish soccer is governed by the Football Association of Ireland (FAI), which has its own model with five steps when it comes to teaching the game. Soccer drills and styles vary from coach to coach, but the framework in Ireland is set in a specific structure.
-
FUNdamental Phase
-
Emphasize the fundamental motor skills of the game in the younger ages. This is when players are 6 to 9 years old. Drills used in this phase involve a ball for each individual player and should center on ball mastery. See examples of drills throughout the phases in the Resource section.
Learning to Train Phase
-
Introduce all four areas of learning with players 9 to 11, teaching basic skills in technical, tactical, physical and mental aspects. Drills can cover passing technique, movement off the ball, speed of movement and goal setting.
-
Training to Train Phase
-
Consolidate skills previously learned and develop tactical awareness in players ages 12 to 16. Soccer drills become game specific and simulate competitive situations.
Training to Compete Phase
-
Create a competitive environment with players ages 16 to 18. Players are involved in a pressure-filled atmosphere at times in these age groups and must become used to results being monitored.
Training to Win Phase
-
Raise the intensity and volume of drills and training for players over 18 years old. Prepare for highly competitive environments and analyze strengths and weaknesses of team and individuals. Drills should prepare a player for a physical environment.
