A computer networking technician builds, analyzes, installs, configures and maintains organizational networks. With the increasing deployment of computer networks, a computer networking technician is a highly sought after IT professional. He is a key member of the overall IT team of an organization.

  1. Educational Requirements

    • A computer networking technician usually requires an associate's or bachelor's degree in computer science, telecommunications, IT, networking, or a related field. Graduates or experienced professionals with accredited certifications in networking specialties from Cisco, Hewlett-Packard, or Novell are also considered for employment by many businesses.

    Daily Responsibilities

    • A computer networking technician manages networks encompassing local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), intranet systems, and other deployable networks involving network cables, firewalls, routers, switches, and allied equipment. She analyzes and monitors network performance at regular intervals and maintains records.

    Other Responsibilities

    • A computer networking technician is responsible for the smooth functioning of all mission-critical networks. Accordingly, he maintains security, troubleshoots problems, and makes systems upgrades where necessary.

    Liaise with External Vendors

    • Depending on organizational roles and responsibilities entrusted by the chief technology officer, a computer network engineer evaluates new products and systems tools and negotiates with external vendors and IT partners for better rates and competitive procurement contracts.

    Additional Attributes

    • A computer network engineer has to showcase a good teamwork ethic and communication skills as he frequently has to work in conjunction with programmers, database architects, and other IT team members on projects.
